I believe it is useful to know a bit about the historical Buddha, and the context in which his teachings were delivered. Here’s a good short introduction from a book considered to be an authoritative introduction to Buddhist ideas.
The book is “The Foundations of Buddhism”, by Rupert Gethin, a Buddhist scholar based in the UK.
